Hello Bloggers,
Well here I am catching up with the Internet bubble! I am very excited about this personal project, BEASTIE DOX. It is my window to the documentary world, with a focus on provocative, funny and emotional feature films.
BEASTIE DOX will have film reviews, interviews with prominent directors/producers as well as useful insider tips.
Why BEASTIE DOX?
BEASTIE DOX is an invitation to slow the pace and take time to reflect, reassess, refine, review and repurpose the way we go about things/ideas/people around us.
Documentaries do just that! They entice us to look at things/ideas/people in a different manner.
Now let’s jump start with my latest discovery, THE COVE.
This is a must see film, both horrifying and beautiful. Horrifying, because it uncovers the messy business of Dolphin exploitation in Taiji, Japan. Beautiful, because the story is intense and thrilling. You will probably shiver, wonder and feel outraged as I did.
The film starts with Ric O’Barry, the dolphin trainer behind the TV phenomenon “Flipper” as he travels to Taiji, a small Japanese fishing town. He intends to uncover a big secret in shallow waters. He teams up with the director Louis Psyhyos, renowned National Geographic Photographer, to unveil the dolphins’ massacre. Both men assemble a special task force to crack the security barriers and bypass the angry fishermen and worried cops. They hire incredibly skilled people to set up hidden cameras in the secluded cove, while at the same time following Japan’s denial of such activities during the proceedings of the International Whaling Commission.
The journey is full of adventures, emotions and shocking truths. It results in a mix of investigative journalism, action movie and “grand reportage”. These elements combined give the film a strong and innovative narrative. I barely had time to blink watching it.
I am humbled by the COVE’s team dedication. They take enormous risk to tell this story… This is exactly what documentary filmmaking is about: Taking risks… The guerrilla style tactics are fun and above all empowering. It teaches us that few can do lots while lots can be done with little.
I can only recommend you to watch it. Below is the link to the film’s website, you’ll find tons of useful information along a call for action.
Get out of your sofa and purge your soul with this one… It is really worth it!
